Fan Q&A | Sean Maitland

Every week during the Autumn Tests, fans can ask a Scotland player questions on Facebook. The best questions will be put to the player and answers published on thescotlandteam.com and the match-day programme. If you’re on Facebook, make sure you like the Scottish Rugby Facebook page and keep an eye out for the Q&A to get involved.

Sean Maitland | Scotland wing

Q. What’s your favourite try for Scotland that you’ve had a part in scoring? Greig Laidlaw setting me up on my debut against England at Twickenham in 2013 to score my first international try. It was an awesome feeling.

Q. Did you always want to be a rugby player and if so why? I’ve always wanted to be a rugby player from the age of five. My dad played, my uncles played, pretty much all my family played. So I just wanted to be like them.

Q. Who’s the worst roommate when on Scotland duty and why? Definitely Stuart Hogg. He goes to bed at 7.30pm so when I get into the room about 9pm I have to tip toe around as he’s got the light off. He’s a grandad.

Q. What advice can you give to my 11-year-old son who wants to play rugby for Scotland when he’s older? Just give everything a go. Don’t just focus on rugby. When I was young I played a lot of sports, it wasn’t until my late teens that I really concentrated on rugby so my advice would be to get out there and give everything a go – rugby, cricket, touch, golf.

Q. Who is your favourite Scotland player of all time? Hoggy would probably be my favourite player. He always making line breaks, always scores tries and he’s just a good, genuine guy.

Q. If you had to switch to the forwards, what position would you choose? Definitely back-row, number 8. Because you carry the ball heaps but you don’t have to scrum so you won’t get cauliflower ears.

Q. Which stadium do you enjoy playing at the most and why? BT Murrayfield. Playing at home in front of Scotland fans especially when they do the lights out before a game – that’s class. There’s nothing like having that home support behind you to give you that extra push.

Q. If you could be another teammate for a day who would it be and why? Grieg Laidlaw as I would like to kick for goals just for one game. Although I would probably sabotage his kicking percentage.
